Dialup

Is it morning yet?
Is everyone awake?
Every circuit has been set
Each wire in its place
So flip the switch
And off we go
Just flip the switch
And nothing’s unknown
Tomorrow is here
The future is now
Tomorrow is here
The future is now
Is this the end?
The farthest shore of humanity?
A new age of men
Imagine the possibilities
So flip the switch
And off we go
Just flip the switch
And nothing’s unknown
Tomorrow is here
The future is now
Tomorrow is here
The future is now

Interconnected Part 1

In another time you’d write me a letter
And I’d wait for it to arrive
But now I send my thoughts to you
In streams of electric light
Somewhere to turn when I’m in my head
And all I need is a word
Hear her voice, see white screen shine
When memory’s blurred
And there’s my love at my fingertips
Just a satellite away
Never sleep without farewell
Awake to blue-light embrace

Virtual World
03:38
|
|||
Drifting slowly through vicarious life
Never look up with bloodshot eyes
Fulfillment in reach, somewhere to belong
A blissful escape, a crystal siren song
Living in a virtual world
Maybe it’s a waste of time
Lose yourself in flashing lights
Living in a virtual world
Why would you change yourself
When you could be someone else
Losing sleep, dreams are pixelated
Friends lose touch, and now you’re isolated
Reality slips away in a time sink
Vision blurred, two worlds indistinct
Living in a virtual world
Maybe it’s a waste of time
Lose yourself in flashing lights
Living in a virtual world
Why would you change yourself
When you could be someone else

Surveillance
05:15
|

Pull the blinds shut, turn the lights off
Don’t let them see, don’t let them watch
Cover your camera with black tape
There’s always a red dot you can never escape
Never be free
I’ll be on display
But I don’t want to be seen
Have to stay engaged
But they’ve got files on me
You can look over your shoulder
Erase your history
But you bought what they sold you
Gave it up for free
They say they shut it down, they pulled the plug
NSA, CIA and corporations
It’s a panopticon, it’s a police state
Better keep your head down, better clean your slate
Blend in
I’ll be on display
But I don’t want to be seen
Have to stay engaged
But they’ve got files on me
You can look over your shoulder
Erase your history
But you bought what they sold you
Gave it up for free
But nowhere’s safe and no one’s anonymous
They’ve got a list of the American populace
So give in if you’ve got nothing to hide
Don’t you trust us? Don’t you want to survive?
I’ll be on display
But I don’t want to be seen
Have to stay engaged
But they’ve got files on me
You can look over your shoulder
Erase your history
But you bought what they sold you
Gave it up for free

Interconnected Part 2
04:05
|

Don’t you wish the silence could drown out all the sound?
Don’t you wish that every now and then, you’d do nothing but wait around?
But you waste your life staring at a crystal ball
That always seems to let you down
An automatic response
An instinct to detach
Scrolling aimlessly until each day
Fades into black
Do you think you’ll ever finish that book you said you’d write?
Do you think you’ll ever see the world that’s just outside?
You’ll never be bored with a distraction in your hand
That leaves you blank and glassy-eyed
An automatic response
An instinct to detach
Scrolling aimlessly until each day
Fades into black
Are we all connected?
Or do we use these shields to hide?
No real alternatives presented
Can’t go backwards in time

Born Online

At a glance I could see myself in you
In turns of phrase, or the little things you do
The worlds that we grew up in seem so far apart
A few years can change the things we know by heart
Well I know reality changes
Seems like there’s a point it breaks
Why would you ever want to go outside
When you’ve never seen an analog life?
What could compare,
What could drag you away,
When you were born online?
Spend your days moving from screen to screen
Got no empty space to wonder what it all means
It’s easy to forget you’re not to blame
If I was in your shoes I might turn out the same
Well I know reality changes
Seems like there’s a point it breaks
Why would you ever want to go outside
When you’ve never seen an analog life?
What could compare,
What could drag you away,
When you were born online?

Superbloom
05:57
|

In a beautiful town called Lake Elsinore
There were flowers in bloom like you’d never seen before
Fiery red hillsides that gleam in the sun
And don’t belong to no one
So the people they came from far and from wide
And parked all their cars right by the roadside
Some wanted to wonder, and some wanted fame
Just wanted someone to remember their name
Sat down in the field for a photograph
Crushed a few flowers into the grass
But when thousands of people make a small sacrifice
Turns out there’s a pretty steep price
If you care too much about how you appear
You’ll forget to live in the now and the here
And when you hold on too tight to the way you want to seem
All you’ll get is a field of trampled red poppies
It was a picture perfect scene until you zoomed out
Fights in the parking lot, screaming and shouting
But when all your perception comes through a screen
What does reality mean?
So the mayor he panicked, said the end was nigh
The town was too crowded and he couldn’t stand by
Asked all the tourists to “Leave, if you please”
So their lives could go on in peace
But the crowd didn’t heed the mayor’s plea
Snuck round the road blocks, swarmed through the trees
Whatever the cost, they didn’t seem to care
Just wanted to stop and to stare
If you care too much about how you appear
You’ll forget to live in the now and the here
And when you hold on too tight to the way you want to seem
All you’ll get is a field of trampled red poppies
Well when all that you want’s a reflection of you
And looking out for yourself is all that you do
You can’t trust your neighbor so you build a white fence
Who cares if they take offense?

Always in Reach
04:31
|
|||
Coming home to you
Too long apart, now you’re back in view
Keeping in touch
Is not the same, is not enough
We always say “I miss you
We’ll be together someday soon”
To have and to hold
But minds wander, hands are cold
I’m so tired
I just want us to be alone
We’re both wired
More than flesh and bone
But when you’re always in reach
You’re never really here with me
We’re so available
I wish my attention wasn’t so accessible
I’m pulled away
From all the little nothings I want to say
We’re side by side
Staring through this window until we’re blind
And we forget
We’re only here for a moment
I’m so tired
I just want us to be alone
We’re both wired
More than flesh and bone
But when you’re always in reach
You’re never really here with me

Cut the Cord
05:46
|
|||
I wonder what it would be like
To build a cabin in the woods
Play Thoreau for just a while
Sometimes I think I should
Sometimes I think I should
Break out of this electric fence
Pretend that it’s the good old days
Cut myself off, live in present tense
If you wanted you could come and stay
If you wanted you could come and stay
I don’t mean to be ungrateful
All of my problems sound so first world
The answers are hard to see
But we’re not all that we can be
But society is all online
It’d be too hard to stay in touch
I couldn’t tear out all my wires
Might get lonely cause I think too much
Might get lonely cause I think too much
I don’t mean to be ungrateful
All of my problems sound so first world
The answers are hard to see
But we’re not all that we can be
Can’t blame the world for what it is
Don’t miss the state of nature
We were struggling just to exist
So we named ourselves “creator”
So we named ourselves “creator”
I don’t mean to be ungrateful
All of my problems sound so first world
The answers are hard to see
But we’re not all that we can be
And I don’t know what the alternative would mean
Why can’t I just close my eyes and go to sleep?
